Chapter Twenty-Two

George sat in his Land Rover and watched his plump wife climb the steps of the Falcon 500, his private jet. It hadn’t been difficult to convince her to fly down to Texas without him. He waited for the plane to spool up the engines and take off, before he started his car. Telluride’s airport was closer to his ranch, but George preferred to keep his jet in a hangar at this airstrip. The smaller airport was shared by several communities on the western slope of the Rockies, but was less crowded than Telluride, and there was far less notoriety.

As he made the long trip back to his secluded ranch, George ran through the details of his upcoming event. The technicians completed the adjustments on the hidden video equipment in each of the guest cabins and bedrooms yesterday. He’d outfitted a large hidden storage closet with monitors and recording equipment so he could watch the live feed and record it for both financial and political blackmailing purposes. He was particularly excited about hosting Colorado’s State Representative, Peter Spiel. Spiel’s influence would certainly come in useful for manipulating policy decisions in the future. George chuckled to himself. I might enjoy watching all these assholes hang themselves politically more than any of the other treats on the menu this week.

When George drove up the long winding drive toward his massive ranch home, he appraised the workers scattered around his property. His chin rose and his chest filled with pride as he regarded his fiefdom. A new crop of undocumented workers snatched up near the border groomed the property around the buildings. Most of them didn’t speak English, and none of them knew where they were, or that the only pay they’d receive would be in the form of food and a cramped place to sleep. George waved at them merrily.

The laborers wouldn’t even try to escape. Where would they go? They’d be afraid of deportation if they went to the police. George laughed again, pleased with the image of himself as a covert, modern-day slave owner.

He wound his way past a group of guest cabins. A handful of dark-haired women in maid uniforms carried fresh linen inside the buildings. Others followed with cleaning supplies. Another group worked inside the main house, cleaning and cooking, preparing for the up-coming event.

He’d noticed a particular woman two days ago—a new member of his herd. He’d call her to his bedroom tonight. Briefly, he wondered how much of a fight she’d put up. He liked it when they fought.

His cell phone rang through the speaker of his Range Rover, and he glanced at his dashboard monitor. Robert’s name flashed on the screen. George pressed a button on the steering wheel. “Bob. How the hell are you? Things are shaping up around here.”

“Good. Real good.”

“What’s up?”

“Remember the experiment I told you I wanted to try?” The professor chuckled. “Well, George, I think you ought to take a turn yourself. I’ve put in an order for several boys to come along with the girls.
